Visual Art, BA

The undergraduate Visual Art degree program gives students a deep foundation in techniques and history of the visual arts, followed by specialized coursework affording opportunities to develop a professional portfolio in the medium or media of their choice and to exhibit their work during the final year of the BA.

Students receive a foundation in theory and practice of visual arts techniques, complemented by coursework in the history of visual art.

Upper-division coursework includes both electives and a professionalization core, and the capstone seminar culminates in a Senior Art Exhibition at the Gallery of Contemporary Art (GOCA) in the Ent Center for the Arts.

• Ability to recognize, describe and evaluate aesthetic criteria and artistic genres through oral and written critiques and analysis.
• Create art that is personal, passionate, and pertinent via a variety of artistic formats, processes, and materials.
• Ability to give public talks and to participate in a variety of exhibitions and educational and professional opportunities (e.g., grants, fellowships).
• Interpret and discuss historical and contemporary art theory and practice through readings, exams, and written essays.
• Capacity to work collaboratively across a variety of communities.
• Ability to work and creatively problem solve across the spectrum of arts.

The Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Visual Art requires the following:

• A minimum of 56 credit hours in Visual Art required coursework (47 hours of VA coursework, 9 hours of AH coursework).
• Requires an additional 9 hours of VAPA Core (department auxiliary) coursework.
• 2.0 UCCS cumulative GPA and a grade of C or better in every course applied toward the major
• Residency: Last 30 credit hours of the degree must be completed while registered in the College of Letters, Arts & Sciences at UCCS
