The Writing Center offers a variety of workshops designed to support faculty in classrooms or students in organizations across the UCCS community. Take a look at the workshop catalog below to find which workshops best support your course plans.  Please note that we are also happy to offer any of these workshops to student groups/organizations. Each interactive workshop is facilitated and led by Writing Center consultants.  All workshops are roughly 45-60 minutes in length except the Writing Center Introduction, which is often paired with other workshops.

The Introduction to The Writing Center is an overview of the services The Writing Center offers. This presentation is often given in conjunction with workshops. Instructors may also bring classes on a "field trip" to the Center for this introduction. 

Length: 10-15 minutes.

The APA, Chicago, or MLA Citation Style workshop presents the basics of MLA, APA, Chicago, or IEEE citation formatting, and addresses the relationship between plagiarism and citations using real life examples and sources. This workshop provides time for students to work on their own citations and introduces them to important resources.

Resources: Students will need to bring their own research and have access to computers. Presenters will need access to a computer-connected projector.

When to schedule: Students should have already collected research and begun the writing process at the time of this workshop.

Length: 45-60 minutes

The Critical Reading workshop introduces students to close reading techniques, as well as best practices for approaching academic texts. 

When to schedule: This workshop is valuable before students will conduct research, or before they read a challenging text for your class.

Length: 45 minutes.

The Peer Response workshop outlines strategies for students to offer one another generative criticism on works-in-progress, both one-on-one and in small groups. First, our presenters describe and define peer response. Then, students break into groups and spend the majority of this workshop offering peer response feedback to classmates. Presenters listen in on these conversations and offer feedback when necessary. The Peer Response Facilitation workshop offers students more time to talk about their own writing than the Peer Response Fishbowl workshop. 

Students will need to bring a rough draft of the assignment.

When to schedule: This workshop should be scheduled to allow students ample time to revise between the workshop and the project's due date.

Length: 45-60 minutes.

The Writing Process workshop introduces students to the varied and unique processes writers experience. Our presenters provide different writing processes, then ask students to map their own writing process. The goal of this workshop is to give students an awareness of their own process in the hopes that visualizing them will offer insight into where students struggle, and where they excel.

When to schedule: This workshop is valuable at any time during the writing process.

Length: 45 minutes.

The Writing Center offers custom presentations and workshops that may combine aspects of our standard workshops or draw on the particular expertise of a specific consultant. We are happy to work with you to create a workshop that will meet the needs of your students.
