Susan Szpyrka has been with the University of Colorado Colorado Springs since July 1, 1984. As the Senior Vice Chancellor for Administration and Finance and Chief Business and Financial Officer, Szpyrka oversees the university's $230 million all-funds operating budget as well as the campus' capital funds budget in excess of $150 million.
The Senior Vice Chancellor for Administration and Finance provides executive leadership for the budget management, coordination, integration, and support of various services, programs, management functions and activities at UCCS and participates in the campus-wide enrollment management functions. Ms. Szpyrka supervises the Associate Vice Chancellor for Campus Planning & Facilities Management, the Associate Vice Chancellor for Administration and Finance, the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Finance and Human Resources, the Executive Director of Public Safety, the Director of Administrative Assessment, Policy, and Efficiency and the Director of Institutional Research.
The Associate/Assistant Vice Chancellors provide executive leadership for key services on campus that partner with academic affairs, student services and advancement in bringing a high level of support for the faculty, staff and students on the UCCS campus. The Associate Vice Chancellor for Campus Planning & Facilities Management provides direct and indirect leadership and supervision of planning and construction, the physical plant, the sustainability office, auxiliary facility services, the mailroom, and parking & transportation services. The Associate Vice Chancellor for Administration and Finance provides direct and indirect leadership and supervision of dining services, retail services, Greenhouse and Farm, Student Health Center, University Counseling Center, Recreation Center, UCCS Presents, University Center, Event/Conference Services, Theatreworks, Galleries of Contemporary Art, Ent Center for the Arts, Residential Life and Housing, Auxiliary Marketing, and the Family Development Center. The Assistant Vice Chancellor for Finance and Human Resources provides direct and indirect leadership and supervision of the budget office, controller and accounting services, student financial services, and human resources.
Ms. Szpyrka earned a bachelor's degree in anthropology and a master's degree in public administration from the University of Colorado Colorado Springs. She began her career with the University working as an employee in the UCCS Bookstore. Ms. Szpyrka is the recipient of the 1990 UCCS Outstanding Staff Member of the Year Award, the 1992 University of Colorado System Staff Council Service Excellence Award, the 1998 UCCS Outstanding Staff Member of the Year Award, the 1999 UCCS Special Chancellor's Award, the 2001 Business for Our Environment Clean Air Campaign Award and in 2006 was named the Outstanding MPA Graduate Student in the Graduate School of Public Affairs. Ms. Szpyrka's service to the University includes election to the position of Staff Council President in 1989, appointment as the campus sexual harassment officer, appointments to numerous search committees, appointment to the Intercollegiate Athletics Advisory Committee, appointment to various academic and facilities strategic planning committees as well as appointment to system committees. Ms. Szpyrka has taught in the Freshman Seminar Program and the Sport and Leisure Program and has developed and taught numerous professional development programs. Prior to her appointment as the Vice Chancellor in 2013, Ms. Szpyrka served as the Senior Associate Vice Chancellor, Chief of Staff, and Associate Vice Chancellor.
