Criminal Justice is a broad and increasingly interdisciplinary field. The Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice (BACJ) program utilizes an interdisciplinary approach to capture both the academic liberal arts emphasis and the professional and policy knowledge required to educate criminal justice professionals.

The BACJ degree is designed to provide a balanced, liberal arts-based education that examines the multidisciplinary nature of criminal justice and the organization and operation of each functional component in the field of criminal justice.

The graduation requirements for a student pursuing a BACJ degree include:

  • Complete 120 semester hours with a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher for all coursework.
  • Complete a minimum of 39 credit hours of criminal justice core courses, including a minimum of 6 credit hours of criminal justice electives.  A minimum of 27 Criminal Justice credit hours must be upper division (3000 or 4000 level). All criminal justice courses applying to the major must be completed with a grade of “C” or better.
  • Complete 45 semester hours in upper-division courses. Students may register for upper-division courses if they have met prerequisites or obtained departmental approval.
  • Residency: Candidates for the BACJ degree from UCCS must complete the final 30 semester hours of coursework as a student in the School of Public Affairs. At least 12 semester hours must be Criminal Justice courses.
  • All courses are 3 credits unless otherwise noted.
  • All CJ courses must be completed with a grade of "C" or better

Option Areas – Students may utilize their major elective course options (and in some cases core and/or required courses) to form a concentration or ‘option’ area in one or two of the following areas:  Forensic Studies, Law Enforcement and/or Law.   Students must meet with a Criminal Justice advisor in the Academic Advising Office to declare an option area and then follow the requirements on the degree progress report.
