Leave Your Car Home- Freshmen Free Bike Program
In order to encourage and support alternative transportation on, to and from campus, UCCS will be providing a free new commuter bicycle to 20 incoming freshman students who live on campus and agree not to bring a car to campus! Transportation is second only to electricity in terms of campus greenhouse gas emissions. Bicycling offers the best alternative to decrease vehicular trips to reduce carbon emissions, improve air quality, reduce traffic congestion, increase safety and create a more attractive physical campus. It is also a great way to stay active and physically fit as well as many proven mental health benefits such as decreased stress and increased productivity. A lottery for the 20 lucky recipients will take place and winners will be contacted by August 21st. The winners will make the final pledge to not bring a car or receive a parking permit for the 2016-2017 school year. All recipients will attend an introductory clinic on bike maintenance and riding safety during the first two weeks of school. After completion of these clinics they will receive their free bicycle with helmet, lock and accessories (light, pump, multitool and flat repair kit). At the end of each semester, the students are required to report the mileage from the mile tracker installed on the bike. Students will return the bikes at the end of the spring semester. This program is funded by the UCCS Green Action Fund with support from Campus Recreation Student Outdoor Learning Experience (S.O.L.E.) and Students for Environmental Awareness and Sustainability (SEAS).For questions or more information, please contact: S.O.L.E.
