Mission/Vision Statement

Mission Statement

Vision Statement

To Begin to Build a Mission Statement

Examples from UCCS Departments

Mission - Where you are as a department.  Creating and reporting a departmental mission/vision statement is currently optional.

A mission statement is a formal statement of the values and principles setting the academic goal of a program.  The mission statement should guide the actions of the faculty, spell out the program's overall goal, provide a sense of direction, and guide decision-making and assist in curriculum decisions.  A mission statement should identify the primary functions or purpose of the program and speak to stakeholders.

Vision - Where we are going

A vision statement may be developed separately or embedded into your mission statement.  A vision statement takes into account the current status of the program, and serves to point the direction of where the department wishes to go.  As a means of setting a central goal that the department will aspire to reach, the vision statement helps to provide a focus for the mission of a department.  The vision statement is not about what the department is currently doing, but what the department hopes to achieve.

To build a mission statement the department should:

  •   State the educational purpose of their field of study that is unique to their discipline.
  •   Identify the departmental values related to serving their students and the community.
  •   Identify the journey you are setting out for your students.

May summarize the activities faculty and students will engage in, jointly or individually
