Chapter 33 Housing Allowance Explanation

Fall and Spring Semester BAH

To be considered full-time by the VA for fall and spring semesters at UCCS, a student must be enrolled for at least 12 credits for the entire 16-week enrollment period.

To receive 1/2 BAH, a student must be enrolled for a minimum of 7 credit hours during the 16-week enrollment period. If a student drops below 7 credit hours, he or she will not receive any BAH.

Graduate students must be enrolled for 5 credit hours for the 16-week enrollment period to be considered full time and 3 credit hours to receive 1/2 rate BAH.

*If you are full time, but taking classes entirely online, then you will only receive half the national average BAH payment.

Summer Semester BAH

To be considered full-time by the VA for summer semesters, a student must be enrolled for at least 6 credit hours for the entire 8-week enrollment period. To receive any BAH, a student must be enrolled for a minimum of 3 credit hours during the 8-week enrollment period. If a student drops below 3 credit hours, he or she will not receive any BAH.

Graduate students must be enrolled for 2 ½ credit hours for the 8-week enrollment period to be considered full-time.

*If you are full time, but taking classes entirely online, then you will only receive half the national average BAH payment.

Points to keep in mind when using Post 9-11 GIB:

  • Since you are paid a housing allowance as part of your GI bill Benefit, you are responsible for your housing arrangements.
  • BAH is paid at the beginning of each month, for the month prior.
    • The first payment may not come for several months (VA will back pay). This is very common; plan accordingly.
  • Students will not receive over the maximum allowable BAH, regardless of number of credit hours taken and when they are completed.
  • BAH is paid only during periods when the student is enrolled.
    • BAH is not paid during winter or summer breaks if the student is not enrolled in classes.
      • Courses taken during breaks (spring, summer, winter) are eligible for BAH payment, by rate of pursuit.
    • The first and last month's BAH are pro-rated because the semester starts and ends in the middle of the month
      • You will not get the full amount at the end of the first and last months of the term.
  • BAH amounts are based on the DOD's Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) rates for an "E-5 with dependents" for the zip code of the school.
  • Online courses are rated differently for BAH
    • If you enroll in online courses only, and you are full time, you will only receive 1/2 the national average BAH.
  • Dropping courses negatively affects BAH.
    • Make sure to consult with the OVMSA about the effect of dropping courses on your BAH.
