Transfer/Dependent Benefits

 Please do this early! 

 

Submitting your paperwork just before the start of the term will result in payment delays. 

 

  1. Apply for your VA Education Benefits, or move them to our school

    • You will receive proof of your eligibility - see the links below
  2. Complete the UCCS registration process

  3. Attend UCCS Orientation, and enroll in classes

  4. Complete New Student Intake (NSI) at the Office of Veteran and Military Student Affairs (OVMSA)

    • This is where you will turn in your proof of eligibility, first
  5. Submit a Residency Petition for In-State Tuition with the Office of the Registrar

 

Please note that graduate students are not required to attend an orientation.

Applying for your Benefit for the First Time

Chapter 33 BAH Explanation
  1. The sponsor must transfer the benefit to the student
  2. Fill out VA Form 22-1990E through Vets.gov
    • Print the confirmation page for your records! 
    • Your Certificate of Eligibility (COE) will be mailed to you in approximately 2 months.  
  3. Bring the COE into our office for your New Student Intake appointment

 

Important notes for new applicants:

You may submit paperwork to our office before your COE arrives.
If you do not have a Certificate of Eligibility, from St. Louis, before the start of your first semester: 
Complete and print the following and bring it to the Office of Veteran and Military Student Affairs (OVMSA) for New Student Intake.
  1. Signed Acknowledgment of Tuition Responsibility (available in the OVMSA)
    • The student is responsible for tuition payments until the Certificate of Eligibility arrives, including any late fees that are allowed to accrue.
  2. Transfer of Education Benefits (TEB) Letter - found on the sponsor's milConnect account
  3. Proof of VA Form 22-1990E (either the printed confirmation page or a VA email)
  4. Once you receive your NEW Certificate of Eligibility, you must bring it into our office.

 

Residency Information - dependents using transferred Chapter 33 are eligible for the Choice Act

  • All residency is determined by the Office of the Registrar, however, eligibility for the Choice Act includes the following

    • Sponsors who are still on active duty
    • Sponsors who have been discharged from the military for less than 3 years
      • Supporting documentation for Choice Act Residency Determination - supplied to the Admissions Office
        • Veteran sponsors - DD-214 Member 4
        • Active Duty Sponsors - Copy of most recent LES
        • Chapter 33 Certificate of Eligibility
  • Yellow Ribbon applies to Chapter 33, awarded at 100%, only

    • Covers the difference between resident and non-resident tuition
    • Needed if the student does not qualify for resident rates under the Choice Act or any other Colorado Residency Bill
      • The student must make the effort to receive resident rates
    • Contact the OVMSA at military@uccs.edu

 

 

 

Note: Chapter 35 does NOT pay tuition, nor does it guarantee resident rates.  For more information on how Chapter 35 benefit works please read the VA pamphlet here.

 

Applying for either Chapter 35 or Fry Scholarship benefit

  1. Fill out VA Form 22-5490 through Vets.gov (Certificate of Eligibility will be mailed to you)
  2. Once your NEW Certificate of Eligibility arrives, bring it into our office for New Student Intake.

 

Residency for Ch 33 Fry Scholarship, only

Students using the Chapter 33 - Fry Scholarship are eligible for resident rates under the Choice Act
  • Provide a copy of your Certificate of Eligibility for the Fry Scholarship to the Office of the Registrar

 

 

Moving Your Existing Benefit to UCCS from any other school (whether local or out of state)

Find your current Certificate of Eligibility (COE) or print off proof of your existing eligibility.  
Fill out VA Form 22-1995 through Vets.gov
Print the confirmation page for your records! 
  • Your Certificate of Eligibility (COE) will be mailed to you in approximately 2 months.  
Once you receive your NEW Certificate of Eligibility, you must bring it into our office.

 

Note for Chapter 33 ONLY:

You may submit paperwork to our office before your COE arrives.
If you do not have a Certificate of Eligibility, from St. Louis, before the start of your first semester:

  • Once you receive your NEW Certificate of Eligibility, you must bring it into our office.

    • Print the confirmation page for your records! 
    • Your Certificate of Eligibility (COE) will be mailed to you in approximately 2 months.  
  2. Once you receive your NEW Certificate of Eligibility, you must bring it into our office.

 

Please remember that all students are ultimately responsible for their tuition. 

Prompt submission of your paperwork will ensure timely payment for your benefits. 

Late fees are not covered by the VA.
