Course Reserves Procedures
It is the policy of the library NOT to place on reserve, materials borrowed from other libraries, bound journals, or reference materials. If you are interested in placing a book, film, or sound recording on Course Reserve that you or the library does not own you should speak with your Department's Subject Librarian to initiate a purchase request for the item. Please allow 2-4 weeks for items to be ordered, shipped, and processed.
Any item placed on Course Reserves (print or electronic) must comply with current U.S. Copyright Law. Learn more about the course reserves and copyright.
Print Reserves Procedures
Unless otherwise instructed, items will be removed from Course Reserve at the end of the semester and be returned to the library collection, or in the case of personal copies, to the rightful owner.
We will accept 1 copy of an item for every 15 students enrolled in a course. Additional copies may be added if heavy use demonstrates a need for more.
Submitting Print Course Reserves
Requests should be submitted at least one week prior to the date needed for class. Requests are usually processed within 48 hours but more time may be needed due to:
- The beginning of a semester. All requests are processed in the order received.
- If the item is currently checked out. Please allow 1-2 weeks for items checked out to UCCS patrons to be returned and 4-6 weeks if the item is checked out to another library such as Prospector or interlibrary loan.
- The library doesn't own the item. Contact your liaison librarian immediately to request the library purchase this item. Please allow 2-4 weeks for items to be ordered, shipped, and processed.
If there are any problems with the request the Print Reserve Manager will contact the instructor. You may be asked to put a personal copy of the item on Course Reserves.
Putting Personal Copies on Course Reserves
Personal copies of books, films, and sound recordings may be submitted for use, however if the library owns a copy that will be placed on reserve instead. Please be aware that for cataloging purposes tattle tape, barcodes, and labels will be affixed to your personal copies and that wear and tear caused by frequent use is to be expected. Should a student damage (beyond repair) or lose your personal copy, then the library will require the student replace the item.
Electronic Reserves Procedures
All articles and book selections submitted for Course Reserve must comply with the fair use statute (17 U.S.C. 107) of the U.S. Copyright Law. The Kraemer Family Library reserves the right to refuse to post any items which they feel falls outside the scope of fair use. The Course Reserve Manager will contact the instructor if any copyright conflicts are encountered.
Submitting Electronic Course Reserves
Requests should be submitted at least one week prior to the date needed for class. Requests are usually processed within 48 hours but more time may be needed at the beginning of a semester. All requests are processed in the order received.
Once approved, a link will be provided to any items which are currently available in any of the Library's licensed databases. If the item is not available in database, the item will be scanned to a PDF (following the fair use statute of U.S Copyright Law) and posted to the instructors Canvas course page.
