Dassanowsky Co-Translation of Drama on Stage in NY

The English translation of contemporary Austrian playwright Felix Mitterer 's stage work Jägerstätter by UCCS Professor of German and Film Studies, Robert von Dassanowsky, and Dean Gregor Thuswaldner of North Park University Chicago, has brought the drama on the life of an Austrian farmer executed by the Nazis for refusing to fight for the Third Reich to its American premiere. The play was presented in a staged dramatic reading at the Austrian Cultural Forum New York theater on December 1.

The production was directed by Guy Ben-Aharon, a noted specialist in bringing international theater to the venues of the East Coast. It featured Obie Award and Elliot Norton Award winning and Tony Award nominated actors.

A post-performance audience discussion was led by a panel which included Dassanowsky, Thuswaldner, Elisabeth Bentley, producer of the forthcoming Terrence Malick film, Radegund (2018) on the life of the martyr, and acclaimed Harvard and NYU Professor Carol Gilligan, who teaches on "resisting injustice."

Dassanowsky and Thuswaldner also received a Translation Grant Award from the Austrian Cultural Forum for the translation, which was published in 2015 by the University of New Orleans Press.
