What are Peak Learning Experiences?
Peak Learning Experiences is a college-wide initiative to prepare our students to thrive in today's job market and beyond. LAS offers many opportunities for students to acquire the knowledge, skills, and experiences necessary to make informed career choices in this ever-changing labor market. Students thrive in environments where they are encouraged to apply their knowledge. LAS provides students with real-world experiences to help develop the skills employers value, including critical thinking, analytical skills, team work, and communications. Peak Learning Experiences include field studies, student exchange, internships, community-based research and service, and engaging in scholarship with faculty. Student-Faculty research is encouraged and supported by financial awards to students and their mentors. Students also have opportunities to present at the Colorado Springs Undergraduate Research Forum (CSURF) or the Mountain Lion Research Day.
In addition to scholarly work, students are encouraged to gain practical experience through internships and service-learning courses. Internships give students opportunities to gain valuable applied experience and make connections in their field. Service-learning courses connect concepts in the classroom to service experiences in the community. SLICE of LAS is a center devoted to helping students find service-learning courses and internships. SLICE also promotes community-based research and provides faculty support for mentoring service-learning courses, internships, and community-based research.
Expanding their horizons through various domestic and international exchange opportunities through programs such as the National Student Exchange (NSE), students gain insight into the historical and cultural makeup of different regions. This insight strengthens their communication skills with individuals of varying backgrounds and ideologies, and prepares them to live and work in a culturally diverse society.
