The Excel Languages and Social Sciences Center (LSSC) models and supports academic excellence at UCCS through FREE DROP-IN support services for Spanish, French, German, Japanese, Latin, Russian, American Sign Language, Chinese, Social Sciences (Anthropology, Philosophy, Sociology, History, GIS/GES), and English (for international students).
The mission of the LSSC is to empower student success through collaborative learning, individualized tutoring, leadership development, and meaningful dialogues.
The LSSC (located in Dwire Hall 270) provides a supportive environment focused on academic achievement: language skills development, success in social sciences coursework, the celebration of cultural diversity, and an inclusive space that builds community. We have a library of varied language resources to include books, magazines, and DVDs. We administer diagnostic language proficiency testing for MAPS credit and placement. Our language conversation tables provide a fun and peer-guided space for students, faculty, staff, and community members to come together and practice a language of interest while engaging in meaningful dialogues and cultural exchange.
Interested in study abroad? Looking for access to foreign films? Want to supplement your personal language learning? Looking for language reference materials? The LSSC is a great place to do homework, access computers/scanner/printer, interact with others who value diversity, and increase your success. Students may also request a meeting with the LSSC Director or a designated staff member to review strategies and techniques to maximize learning and academic performance in and out of the classroom. We can assist with learning preferences, study skills, note-taking, time and energy management, organization, goal setting, test taking and test anxiety, stress management, and resource referrals! Online and distance education students are advised to contact the Director to arrange tutoring support or conversation appointments.
