Senior Instructor of Japanese
Languages & Cultures Department

DWIR 259

My name is Rieko McAdams. I am a professor at both Pikes Peak Community College (PPCC) and University of Colorado at Colorado Springs (UCCS) teaching Japanese. For over 20 years, I have taught Japanese language and culture at undergraduate and elementary grades. My career in education started when I taught English to middle school students in Japan in my early 20’s.

I was born and raised in Okinawa. My ex-husband worked for DODDS, so we moved quite frequently to different parts of Japan. Luckily, after our divorce, I moved to the US with my children, and have been grateful to spend the last 25 years of my life here in Colorado. During my free time I teach dancing (classic Okinawa dance) at Colorado College and at Elementary schools. I am also a professor for Ikebana, which I don’t practice as much as I should. It helps me appreciate the beauty in nature that is easily forgotten in our busy lives.

My philosophy of teaching is “to have fun” so I created my class activities to become more engaging. I leverage ‘plays’ as a means to teach the students Japanese which started at PPCC in 1998 until last year. I plan to start “Nihonngo Geki” in April of 2016. It takes lots of hours of work to make scripts and practice during holidays, but priceless.
