Barbara J Frye – Associate Professor and Associate Dean of the College of Education

Barbara has been an educator for over 40 years. She began her teaching career in Colorado Springs School District 11 after graduating from Colorado College. She taught first and second grades at Wilson and Washington elementary schools in Colorado Springs before moving to Maine where she continued teaching in the primary grades. Deciding that she wanted to learn more about the teaching of literacy, Barbara moved to Minneapolis and began her doctoral work at the University of Minnesota. It was during this time that she became interested in early intervention for struggling first grade students which became the focus of her work. Barbara spent 15 years at the University of South Florida St. Petersburg and then, missing the mountains and outdoor activities, returned to Colorado. She has been at UCCS since 2006 and teaches undergraduate and graduate classes in literacy. She served as Director of Teacher Education for eight years and has been the associate dean for the past two years.

Barbara’s service record at UCCS includes: membership on campus and system governance bodies and committees. She has also served on several collaborative committees with personnel from the Colorado Department of Education.

When she isn’t working, Barbara enjoys riding her horses and spending time with her three dogs.
