Jenene Nagy invites visitors to GOCA to look, and then to look harder. The artist's site-specific installation disappear here has transformed GOCA's 2,800 square foot campus gallery space through color, optical geometric abstraction and building materials. In planning for the past two years, Nagy responded to the interior space of the gallery and the surrounding environments of Colorado Springs as well as her southern California home. The resulting monumental and ephemeral work of art was created with common materials - house paint, drywall, 2x4's, mirrors and lumber - during a residency at UCCS with assistance of students.

Jenene Nagy has created an immersive experience that is at its core about the act of seeing and about space, referencing the work of 1960s Op Art painters and architectural deconstructivists in the process. Known for pure geometric forms, color theory and investigations into the physiology and psychology of perception, Op artists created effects that ranged from subtle to unsettling and disorienting. Deconstructivism in architecture is typified by an approach to creating spaces that isolates architectural elements and playfully subverts what we expect of the buildings we are used to inhabiting.

The landscapes of Colorado Springs and Los Angeles factor heavily in this work - billboards, signs, and placards are not what we might first think of as landscapes, even though they dominate our visual experiences in their frequency. As the artist states: "I am interested in obliterating the hierarchy between image and object. When the viewer first arrives in the space they are immediately confronted with the object-ness of the props and their placement on the platform. As you move through the piece you reach a single perspective where these props disappear into a field. The props are intended to call to mind road signs, billboards, etcetera - objects in our visual space designed to command our attention but that, through their ubiquitous nature, are often overlooked."

Nagy's artistic practice ranges from obsessively detailed small graphite drawings to massive architectural "interventions". This new work melds her geometric drawings and sculptural installations to mesmerizing effect. As a constant thread through all her work, Nagy invites viewers to pay special attention to what she is spotlighting, and in particular to what we might be overlooking in our everyday environments. She invites us all to take notice and to see.

About the Artist
Jenene Nagy is a visual artist living and working in Southern California. She received her BFA from the University of Arizona in 1998 and her MFA from the University of Oregon in 2004. Nagy's work has been exhibited nationally and internationally at venues including the Portland Art Museum, Weatherspoon Art Museum, Torrance Art Museum, Takt Kunstprojektraum in Berlin, Germany, and Dam Stuhltrager in NY, among others. She has received grants from the NY Foundation for Contemporary Art, the Ford Family Foundation, Colorado Creative Industries, and the Oregon Arts Commission. Her work was named by the Huffington Post as one of the Northwest's Top Ten Exhibition Picks of 2010. Along with a rigorous studio practice, Nagy is one half of the curatorial team TILT Export:, an independent art initiative with no fixed location, working in partnership with a variety of venues to produce exhibitions. From 2010-11 she was the Curator-in-Residence for Disjecta Contemporary Art Center in Portland, Oregon and currently serves on the Board of Directors for ARTPAPERS. Nagy's work is represented by PDX Contemporary Art and Michael Warren Contemporary in Denver, Colorado.
