There are many ways to manage your time. Some students say they are able to remember everything, some might use a calendar on their phone, and some use a planner. As you begin your college career, you will find that using some kind of reliable system to help keep track of assignments, appointments, and other important things in life, it will help lower the stress and teach you skills that will be valuable when you go out into your career. Many times in high school students are encouraged to use a planner, but since there are many reminders and a consistent, full schedule of classes each week, students don't feel the need to use one. As you start your classes at UCCS, your weekly schedule is going to feel very open and you will need to fill in your own time and balance your schedule.
Below is an example of a student schedule. In the Study Smarter Not Harder workshop, we teach students to plan out their day in 30 minute increments because that gives you the most effective way to use your time. We highly encourage students who have not used or have not had success with a schedule before, to use a weekly planner like the one below. A habit of creating a solid schedule will help you keep track of important things going on throughout the week and semester. If you need help putting together a weekly plan that works for you, please call the Office of First Year Experience to set up a time to meet (719-255-3570) and learn strategies that could work for you.
