Active – a collegiate man or woman who has been initiated into lifelong membership.

Alumnus / alumna – an affiliated member who has graduated from college.

Bid – a formal invitation to join a Greek letter organization.

Bid Day – the day on which Greek letter organizations are first allowed to extend invitations for membership to potential new members.

COB – Continuous Open Bidding. The membership process that allows certain chapters to add members after Formal Recruitment has ended.

Formal recruitment – A week of parties designed to introduce each sorority and fraternity chapter to Potential New Members (PNMs).

Fraternity – A Greek letter organization for men or women.

Initiation – the formal ceremony or process that welcomes new members to the full rights and privileges of Greek membership.

Legacy – a sibling, child, or grandchild of an initiated member of a fraternity or sorority.

Letter of recommendation – a form completed by an initiated member of a fraternity or sorority, recommending a potential new member for membership in that organization.

MRABA – Membership Recruitment Acceptance Binding Agreement. A binding agreement signed by a potential new member at the end of formal sorority recruitment stating her willingness to accept a bid from any chapter listed on it.

New member – a member who has accepted a bid from an organization but has not yet fulfilled the requirements for initiation.

PNM – Potential New Member. An unaffiliated student interested in joining a Greek letter organization.

Quota – the total number of potential new sorority members that can be offered bids during the formal recruitment process

Rho Gamma – A recruitment guide. A woman who temporarily disaffiliates from her chapter to act as a guide and to provide an unbiased opinion to her assigned PNMs.

Rush – the membership process where fraternities meet and offer membership to unaffiliated men. This is more informal than sorority recruitment.

Single Intentional Preference – Occurs when a Potential New Member (PNM) does not rank all of the Preference Round parties she attends on her MRABA.

Sorority – A Greek letter organization specifically for women.
