Dr. Valerie Martin Conley is the Dean of the College of Education. She is a nationally recognized University administrator, higher education researcher, author, and professor of 27 years. She holds the M.A. and B.A. in Sociology from the University of Virginia, and the Ph.D. in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies from Virginia Tech. She served as Chair for the Department of Counseling and Higher Education at Ohio University where she also taught courses on institutional research, assessment, management of higher education and policy. She has extensive experience in university administration, research, and private industry. Dean Conley has specialized in quantitative applications for educational policy and research, drawing upon her experience as a consultant to the U.S. Department of Education's National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). A former institutional researcher, she has served on the board of directors for the Association for Institutional Research (AIR) and chaired the association's Higher Education Data Policy Committee. In June 2007, she received the Ohio University Outstanding Graduate Faculty Award. 

Areas of Interest

Strategic planning, accreditation, policy, and higher education research

  • As co-chair of the Institutional Effectiveness and Accountability Team for the university's strategic plan - Vision Ohio, led the launch of the strategic change initiative to more effectively use data and information in support of decision-making at Ohio University.
  • Led a two-year effort to develop a Faculty Workload Policy for the College of Education.
  • Experienced Institutional Researcher with an in-depth knowledge of accreditation, student academic support programs, First-Year Experience (FYE) programs, enrollment management, campus climate issues and continuing education.
  • Led information technology services for several private computer-consulting firms in the Washington, DC area prior to becoming a higher education administrator.
  • Expertise with National education data is often sought after at Ohio University and national venues.

Student Support Activities

Mentor: Women's Center Mentoring Program. (2012) Ohio University.  The Women's Center Mentoring Program provides an opportunity for junior and senior female students at Ohio University to connect with a female mentor in their personal and professional fields of interest. The goal of the program is to enrich the female undergraduate experience at Ohio University and to pair students with a mentor who can offer guidance and assist them in reaching their personal and professional goals. 

Instructor: Ronald E. McNair Scholars Program, Research Seminar Series. (2002) Virginia Tech.  The McNair Scholars Program provides academic support, faculty mentoring, a summer research experience, and preparation for graduate school for financially disadvantaged, first-generation college students of any race or ethnicity, who are U.S. citizens and students from groups currently underrepresented in higher education. 

Instructor: Project Success.  (1998) Virginia Tech.  Project Success is an academic support program for students with an overall GPA below 2.00. Participants meet in small groups weekly to explore personal, academic, and professional issues related to academic performance.
