UCCS students volunteer in Nicaragua
In May of 2017, we had the opportunity to travel with 48 medically driven UCCS students and 2 faculty advisors to Matagalpa, Nicaragua where we provided clinical triage and public water works. We were fortunate in the 3 clinic days and were able to help 1,865 people. We also spent a day improving water access to lower villages by improving the terrain and running necessary pipeline to ensure access to clean sustainable water. The experience was truly humbling, life changing and something that every aspiring medical professional should experience. The smiles on the children’s faces provided an overwhelming feeling of accomplishment. Despite the language barrier, the community member’s faces expressed gratitude and provided an overwhelming warmth experienced by all members of the Global Medical Brigades UCCS chapter that attended.
