"The 'Culture of Poverty' and Other Myths That Harm Low-Income Families"

An exploration of the myths that too often guide conversations about class and poverty in schools and distract us from the real work of educational equity. Gorski will focus on developing a fuller understanding of class and poverty as they operate in the U.S. and its schools and what educators can do within their own spheres of influence to reject these myths and create equitable learning environments for low-income students.

Michael Kimmel
to Visit UCCS in November

Sociologist Michael Kimmel is probably the leading researcher and writer on men and masculinity in the world today. The author or editor of more than twenty volumes, his books include Changing Men: New Directions in Research on Men and Masculinity (1987), Men Confront Pornography (1990), The Politics of Manhood (1996), The Gender of Desire (2005) and The History of Men (2005). His documentary history, Against the Tide: Pro-Feminist Men in the United States, 1776-1990 (Beacon, 1992), chronicled men who supported women’s equality since the founding of the country. His book, Manhood in America: A Cultural History (1996) was hailed as the definitive work on the subject. Kimmel also co-edited Privilege: A Reader (2003) with UCCS Professor Abby Ferber. His recent work addresses some of society’s most pressing issues, ranging from terrorism to school shootings, and their gendered dimensions.

Kimmel will talk about his newest book, Guyland, newly published by Harper Collins this fall.
A dynamic speaker, this is one talk you do not

The BIG Idea Workshop at UCCS

"A great mix of background materials, activities, and practical applications
make this a valuable workshop. It expanded my understanding from abstract
concepts of diversity to how to really build an inclusive community in the
classroom and throughout the campus."

---Tom Christenson, Dean, College of Letters, Arts, and Sciences.

What is the BIG Idea?
YOU have the power to transform the culture on this campus
to become more inclusive by consciously valuing the unique perspectives,
achievements and struggles of others with whom you interact every day,
whether in the classroom, parking lot, or hallways.
YOU have the power and the choice to make all people with whom you interact
feel that they belong.

The Little Story Behind the BIG Idea Workshop
Working with the Interim Associate Vice Chancellor
for Diversity Kee Warner, a group of faculty, staff and students (the Building
Inclusiveness Group, a.k.a. BIG) has been developing a diversity education
program for UCCS since 2006.

This program has its roots in the campus-wide Diversity Strategic Plan (DSP) and the CU Blue Ribbon Commission on Diversity. A limited number of the BIG Idea Workshops will be offered this Fall 2008 Dena Samuels (Women’s and Ethnic Studies), Eric Nissen (Student Recruitment & Admissions Counseling) and Kimbra Smith (Anthropology Department).
The two-and-a-half-hour interactive workshop aims to provide awareness, knowledge and skills to UCCS faculty, staff and students about personal and institutional dynamics of inclusiveness. Providing hands-on strategies, the goal of the workshop is to better equip members of the UCCS community to engage diverse social identities, to explore how oppression and privilege operate in our daily lives, and to create a more inclusive campus culture. We hope you will join us.

What Next?

Sign up for the next workshop or schedule one for your department or college! Please contact Dena Samuels at dsamuels@uccs.edu, Eric Nissen at enissen@uccs.edu or Kimbra Smith at ksmith5@uccs.edu. Thank you for your continued
support!

revelation of a complex character, a modern detective story, and a virtuoso turn by Erik
Sandvold, who reprises his critically acclaimed performance just for us. Winner of the Tony
Award and the Pulitzer Prize. Check out Theatreworks website: www.theatreworkscs.org for
