The Flu Challenge

Date: 2009-09-09

The following e-mail message was sent to your student this Tuesday, August 25, 2009 about H1N1 (swine) flu.

The Student Health Center would like to make you aware of the following information and to ask your support as we prepare for the likelihood that there will be cases on campus in the next few weeks.

There are currently no confirmed cases at UCCS, though there are eight at the University of Colorado at Boulder and even higher numbers at universities where classes have been in session for several days. You will likely hear or read news reports about these universities.

Still, there is no reason for overt concern. Most individuals who contract H1N1 are uncomfortable but do not require medical treatment.

We ask your support of the health guidelines and of your student. The most important guideline is that students stay out of class for at least 24 hours after their fever is gone. For most students, this means staying at home until they are well. For students living in housing, we plan to isolate students to the best of our ability. If possible, we recommend students recuperate at home and return to campus when well.

Students will be able to make up classes that are missed due to illness.

If you have questions or concerns, I recommend visiting the Student Health Center website, http://www.uccs.edu/~shc/News.html or contacting the center at 255-4444.
