UCCS to host national conference on school improvement

Date: 2008-07-15

The use of data to improve public school achievement will be the focus of a national education leaders conference July 15-17 at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs.

The UCCS College of Education, Colorado Springs School District 11 and School Net, Inc., will host EduStat University 2008 on the UCCS campus to provide education leaders tools needed to build data-driven decision making into their schools. The conference will feature speeches, workshops, and case studies designed to allow educators to implement data-driven decision processes into their own schools with the goal of improving student achievement.

“This collaboration has produced one of the most innovative and comprehensive professional development offerings for school and district leaders around,” said John Weathers, assistant professor, Education. “I don’t think any of us could have produced such an event without working together.”

Weathers will lead a workshop in cooperation with District 11 officials. Robert Marzano, a nationally acclaimed education analyst, will provide a keynote speech beginning at 8:30 a.m. July 16 focused on helping educators build data-driven decision making into comprehensive plans to improve student performance. A complete schedule and registration information is available at www.edustat.com. La Vonne Neal, dean, College of Education, will welcome the conference attendees and participate throughout the conference.

Previous EduStat conferences were conducted in New York City. This first-time offering in Colorado is the result of previous work by Weathers and SchoolNet and a common goal of providing educators hands-on professional development in using data to improve student achievement
