Roy C. Ballard, VAPA Technical Theatre/Scenic Design teacher, THEATREWORKS Technical Director, and In-house Scenic Designer has worked extensively throughout New York City as a carpenter, technical director and scenic designer. He has built and designed for Broadway, Off-Broadway, and way the heck Off-Broadway. Roy received an Off-Off Broadway Review award for his Scenic Design/Technical Direction in Caryl Churchill?s The After-Dinner Joke which was written up in EntertainmentDesign magazine. Technical Direction credits in New York City include: Brides of the Moon, The Devils, Shopping and Fu*****, Mother Courage and Her Children, Bob, and The Most Fabulous Story Ever Told.
Since moving to Colorado Springs in 2005, Roy has built and designed shows at the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center, Starbar Players, and THEATREWORKS. He has received four awards for Technical Achievement and Scenic Design by The Pikes Peak Arts Council. He currently resides at UCCS-THEATREWORKS. Local Scenic Design work includes: I am My Own Wife, Twelve Angry Men, The Last Night of Ballyhoo, Wit, The Bacchae, Boeing Boeing, and The 39 Steps. Original productions include: A Cowboy Christmas Carol and I Am Nicola Tesla.
Roy teaches an Introduction to Technical Theatre class as well as an upper level Scenic Design course. He has taught courses on creating props and led practicums in technical theatre. He believes in a very hands on approach to teaching and encourages his students to actively participate in student productions as well as local professional theatre. |
