Harris Visual Art Scholarships, in the amount of $500 -$1000, will be awarded this spring for the academic year 2013-14. Awards are granted based on financial need and artistic merit to any VAPA Visual Art major. Harris Visual Art Scholarships are awarded by VA faculty. Louis Cicotello believed that artists provide the creative foundation for the cultural vitality of a community. One award of $1,000 will be granted to a VAPA student graduating with a major in Visual Arts during Academic Year 2012/2013. THIS IS AN ELECTRONIC APPLICATION ONLY. Visual Art

The Visual Art program helps you realize your unique artistic aspirations through a myriad of culturally relevant artistic practices. By way of a curriculum that emphasizes an experimental, cross-disciplinary approach in the studio, and the study of art history and critical theory in the classroom, the visual art faculty guides you to expand the scope of your artistic vision, while thoroughly preparing you for a professional life in the contemporary art world.

Within the Visual and Performing Arts Department (VAPA), Visual Art is offered as either a concentration or as a minor. In both cases you can choose from a wide range of media options, including painting, drawing, sculpture, installation, performance, social practice, photography, digital media, and video. In addition, you're highly encouraged to explore hybrid processes and build collaborative relationships with other disciplines. Such collaborations include working with students and faculty in art history, film studies, museum studies & gallery practice, music, and theatre - and with other departments within the larger university community.

The VA faculty is comprised of creatively diverse, professionally active artists who share a common vision: all are deeply invested in helping you reach your creative and academic potential. Thus our classes are intimate, supportive, rigorous environments where you're encouraged to take risks. Studio facilities are ample and well equipped, and include drawing, painting, sculpture, photography (darkroom and digital) and a state of the art Macintosh computer lab. You'll also have numerous opportunities to exhibit your work, including in the student gallery at the Heller Center for the Arts and Humanities, in the Galleries of Contemporary Art (GOCA 1420 & 121) and in various venues throughout the city. Other opportunities include participating in the Student Art Club, which sponsors workshops, field trips, lectures and other events. There are also opportunities to explore the world through travel courses. Previous destinations include New York City, Santa Fe, Florence, Rome and London. VAPA and VA also offer a visiting artists lecture series, which gives students an opportunity to engage and work with local, national, and internationally recognized artists as well.

The Visual Art curriculum culminates with a senior level class in professional development. This course guides you through the ins-and-outs of building a professional dossier. This process includes building a digital portfolio of artwork, submitting work to professional exhibition venues, writing grants, and learning how apply to graduate school, among other things. The highlight of this course is the Senior Thesis Exhibition at the GOCA 1420 / UCCS on campus. You'll have the experience of preparing for this exhibition by collaboratively designing its public relations materials, organizing the opening reception, and curating and installing the work. As a part of this course you will also present your creative research via a series of public artist talks. Subsequently, when you leave UCCS, you're well equipped for life in the 21st century art world.
Colorado Springs is home of the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center, Colorado College?s Idea Space, GOCA 1420 and 121 / UCCS, The Heller Center for the Arts and Humanities, the Business of Art Center, and a range of commercial galleries. Regional venues include the Denver Art Museum, the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver, the Arvada Center for the Arts, the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art, the Sangre de Cristo Art Center and a host of other commercial and non-profit cultural institutions... all a short drive from Colorado Springs.

Visual Art Option: 60 credits

36 in Visual Art, 12 in VAPA, 6 in Art History, and 6 within another VAPA option for a Cross-Disciplinary component.

Visual Art Concentration Requirements: 42 credits

Core Requirements: 9 credits
VA 1010: Beginning Studio 2D
VA 1020: Beginning Studio 3D
VA 1040: Beginning Drawing

Lower Division Requirements: 9 credits
2000 / 3000 level courses

Upper Division Requirements: 18 credits
VA 3980: Seminar in Studio Problems (3 credits) - Offered ONLY during the spring term. Concurrent enrollment with AH 3860 during a student's junior year is REQUIRED.
VA 4980: Professional Seminar (3 credits) - Offered ONLY during the spring term. Prerequisites: VA 3980 and AH 3860. Enrollment during a student's senior year is REQUIRED.
VA 3000 / 4000 level OR VA 9400: (12 credits)

Note: Any VA 3000/4000 level class (except VA 3980 and 4980) can be taken twice for credit (6 hours towards a student's degree). In addition, up to 8 credit hours of VA 9400: Independent Study can be used towards a students degree.

Art History Requirements: 6 credits
AH 1500 Art & Ideas: Michelangelo to Basquiat
AH 3860: Contemporary Art

VAPA Requirements: 12 credits
3 credits VAPA 1000 level
6 credits VAPA 3000 level
3 credits VAPA 4000 level Capstone

Cross-Disciplinary Requirements: 6 credits
2000 / 3000 / 4000 level courses in Film Studies, Museum & Gallery Practice, Music and Theatre.

Please note:
Core courses, VA1010, VA1020, VA1040, AH1500, VAPA1000 level, lay the foundation for the conceptual, technical, and formal skills needed for advanced work these courses must be completed before enrolling in any 2000 / 3000 / 4000 level visual art courses.

VA 3980 & AH3860 are companion courses and must be taken concurrently during the junior year and before enrolling in VA 4980
VA 4980 Professional Seminar is taken the senior year
VAPA 4000 Interdisciplinary Capstone is taken the senior year
3000 / 4000 level VA courses may be repeated once for credit (Except for VA 3980 and VA 4980)

It is recommended that all visual art students meet with a visual art faculty adviser once a year.

Visual Art Minor Requirements: 24 credits

6 credits required core; 3 credits 2000 level; 9 credits 3000 / 4000 level. The core must be completed before enrolling in any 2000 / 3000 / 4000 level visual art courses. 2000 / 3000 / 4000 level course must be in one media.

Core Requirements: 12 credits
