Mavs end drought, but lose finale


The Mavericks ended a four-game scoring drought, but still lost for the eighth time in their past nine games.

The University of Colorado-Colorado Springs avenged its loss to Mesa State earlier this season with a 2-1 victory Sunday in Colorado Springs. It was the final game of the season for the Mavericks.

Mesa (2-15-2, 2-11-1 RMAC) tied the game 1-1 with a goal by senior Tyler Amerman at 59:23. It was Amerman’s first goal in his three years at Mesa.

The Mountain Lions (8-10-1, 5-8-1 RMAC) scored the game-winner in the 79th minute.

Mesa senior goalkeeper Josh Tinaglia made four saves in the first half then played forward in the second half, taking two shots. The Mavs took 13 shots, including five on goal. UCCS had 20 shots, nine on goal.


Women’s Soccer

Mesa ties Regis in Denver


The Mesa State women’s soccer team tied Regis 2-2 on Sunday in Denver, but came away with much more than that.

The Mavericks (10-9-1, 7-8-1 RMAC) may have gained some confidence and earned some more respect for a rematch at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Denver in the first round of the RMAC Tournament.

Mesa junior Dany Ramirez scored in the 88th minute to send the game into overtime. Brittany Cito gave the Mavs a 1-0 lead with a goal in the 24th minute.

Regis (13-3-4, 10-2-4 RMAC) tied the game six minutes into the second half, then took a 2-1 lead at 64:39.

Mesa took 14 shots, including six on goal. Regis had 15 shots, six on goal.

Mesa junior goalkeeper Alicia Kahler made four saves.

Running

Martin wins Spooktacular 5K

Kevin Martin completed the 3.1-mile course in 18 minutes, 10 seconds to win Saturday’s Holy Family Spooktacular 5K race in Grand Junction.

Martin, running in the 15-19 age division, finished 33 seconds ahead of Robb Reece to win the race. Ryan Melchor was third.

Karah Levely-Rinaldi was the women’s winner, finishing in 21:59, 1:13 ahead of Cat Morrison. Sherry Williams was third in 23:40.

College Football

Texas back to No. 2 in AP Top 25

NEW YORK — After its best performance of the season, Texas is back to No. 2 in the AP college football poll.

The Longhorns jumped Alabama and landed right behind top-ranked Florida on Sunday, the day after winning 41-14 at Oklahoma State.

Florida, No. 1 for all but one week this season, received 38 first-place votes after a convincing 41-17 victory over Georgia.

The Longhorns started the season ranked second, but have been No. 3 behind the Gators and Crimson Tide the past three weeks. Texas received 13 first-place votes from the media panel.

Alabama, which spent a week at No. 1, slipped to No. 3 during an off week. The Crimson Tide received eight first-place votes.

Cincinnati and Boise State round out the top five.

Golf

Cook captures Charles Schwab Cup

SONOMA, Calif. — John Cook won the season-ending Charles Schwab Cup Championships by five strokes Sunday for his second Champions Tour title in three weeks, and Loren Roberts held on to win the season points title.

Cook, also the Administaff Small Business Classic winner two weeks ago in Texas, closed with a 3-under-par 69 to finish at 22-under 266 at Sonoma Golf Club.

Roberts had a 66 to tie for sixth at 13-under 275 and win the points title and $1 million annuity for the second time in three years
