COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. – The University of Colorado at Colorado Springs will join with a local developer to improve the quality of life for senior citizens living in group housing communities.

Chancellor Pam Shockley-Zalabak announced the partnership between the UCCS Gerontology Center and Colorado Springs-based Dunn and Associates, Inc., developer of The Palisades at Broadmoor Park, a planned 108-unit retirement community in southwest Colorado Springs.

“This agreement, which brings together academic expertise and private development, is an example of the university’s commitment to engage with its community,’’ Shockley-Zalabak said. “This is an opportunity for UCCS faculty and students to help improve senior housing in Colorado Springs, in Colorado, and throughout the nation.”

Sara Qualls, Kraemer Family Professor of Aging Studies and director of the UCCS Gerontology Center, will lead the effort to bring together university experts, ranging from psychologists and nurses who specialize in the needs of older Americans, to engineers interested in creating new devices to aid the elderly.

“This is a learning opportunity for university faculty and for students ranging from freshmen to doctoral levels,” Qualls said. “We don’t know everything there is to know about aging or creating a supportive environment. This partnership gives us the opportunity to discover and to learn how to improve the quality of life for a fast-growing segment of the population.”

Dunn & Associates, Inc. will develop and operate The Palisades at Broadmoor Park. UCCS faculty will consult in the design and operation of the facility that calls for construction of 8 independent cottages with one-car garages, 40 independent apartments, and 60 assisted living apartments. Plans call for the community to have amenities such as a wellness clinic, multiple dining areas, exercise rooms, spa, barber and beauty shop, multi-media room, chapel, walking paths and a pub with billiards. The partnership with Dunn is an extension of the Gerontology Center’s mission and services provided by the CU Aging Center located 1436 N. Hancock Street, near the Colorado Springs Senior Center.
