The Sustainability Committee is a regular standing advisory committee of the Faculty Assembly that is part of the governance of the university. The Sustainability Committee was formed in 2002 to fill a need for increased awareness about sustainability on campus. At the Chancellor's request, the group developed a proposal as part of the 'Inventing the Future' initiative. The proposal from this plan included a minor in Sustainable Development that was approved by the School of LAS and graduated the first student fall 2006. Committee members and students attended planning meetings for the new recreation center and lobbied for a green building. Heightened awareness on campus led to Public Safety purchasing the first hybrid vehicle for campus use. The Sustainability Committee has facilitated the addition of books related to sustainability to the library as well as exhibitions on topics related to sustainability. The Committee continues to further educate students and staff about sustainability and to lobby for sustainability initiatives at UCCS.
This committee, which is open to new members, meets the 2nd Friday of each month at 8:30 a.m. in the Library. Please contact the committee chair, Judith Rice Jones, for further information.
