UCCS students overwhelmingly approve solar fee

'Referendum #2: Solar Energy' passed with overwhelming support at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs during April 2008 campus elections. The student-initiated statute asked their peers to support a $5 fee per semester, to install solar panels on university buildings. This initiative is expected to generate more than $300,000 during its five-year duration. More than 76% voted in favor of the referendum.

The referendum, put forth by student government and the sustainability club on campus, is a conscious attempt to fight dependence on fossil fuels at a rapidly developing institution located in one of the sunniest states in the nation. This student movement demonstrates support for the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment that Chancellor Shockley-Zalabak signed in 2007. Reducing greenhouse gas emissions is in keeping with a significant focus on sustainability at UCCS. "I am encouraged by students' willingness to raise fees in an effort to create a more sustainable university. On an increasingly populated, warming planet, change has to happen, and this referendum is evidence of that change at UCCS" says Joe Lavorini, Co-executive of Students for Environmental Awareness and Sustainability, SEAS. Students also approved a $15 fee designed to provide affordable health care at the Student Health Center.
