I'm a current student in LAS, Engineering or Nursing. What are the admission requirements to transfer into Business?
CRITERIA FOR
ADMISSION –Students, once at the university, may
apply to transfer to the College of Business if they have met both requirements
below:
1. A
minimum of 15 semester hours must have been completed on the CU-Colorado Springs
campus. Courses taken at other institutions are not
considered in the required 15 hours or in the GPA.
2. A minimum overall
GPA of 2.5 must have been achieved in all course work taken at University of
Colorado. Remedial work is not included in the
average.
RESIDENCY
REQUIREMENT - Interested students should transfer as early as possible to be
sure they take a minimum 30 hours of business course work after they are admitted (in
residency). Specific courses that should not be
taken until the student is admitted to the College of Business include the 18 hours in the Area
of Emphasis & BUAD 450.
TRANSFER PROCESS – After you have met the criteria for transfer into the College of Business, you may complete an Intra-University Transfer Application with an Academic Advisor in the Student Success Center, Main Hall 2nd floor. The Application will be given to the Business Advisor for processing.
OPTIONS TO CONSIDER
It is important for those not admitted to consider the
following:
1.Take
advantage of the various career exploration services offered in the Student Success Center for
assistance in selecting an appropriate major.
2.
Have an alternative non-business major in
mind, such as Communication, Economics, or Psychology. Contact the Student Success Center concerning the specific
program requirements. Supplement the new major with a
business minor.
3. Complete your non-business
undergraduate degree and then apply for admission to the MBA program. Admission requirements to the MBA program include a strong
undergraduate GPA and strong math and English skills.
When can I declare my emphasis, and how does it relate to the Professional Program?
Students admitted to the College of Business are initially designated as Pre-Business (BUPR) students. They follow the freshmen and sophomore sequence of courses listed in the Model Degree Program. Upon completion of the Skills Courses, with at least a grade of "C-" in each, students are eligible to apply to the Professional Program. An overall GPA of 2.5 and a business course GPA of 2.5 are required for admission to the Professional Program. Students will not be allowed to take 400- level business courses until all of the Skills Courses are completed.
The Professional Program
The junior and senior years constitute the Professional Program of the undergraduate business curriculum. Admission is competitive and granted to those students demonstrating the highest promise of professional success. An overall GPA of 2.5 and a business course GPA of 2.5 are required for admission to the Professional Program. Business students may apply when they have completed at least 60 hours to include the skills courses. Please check the Business Flowchart for information on graduating from the professional program.

How important are prerequisites?
Prerequisites are STRICTLY enforced by
the College of Business. There are two types of prerequisites that Business students should
note.
1. Course
prerequisites: A student must have the course
prerequisites stated in the course bulletin/schedule BEFORE enrolling for a course, unless it is
listed as a co-requisite. While the registration
system will allow a student to register for the course, the College of Business screens for
completion of prerequisites two weeks before courses begin and will drop a student from the
course if the prerequisites have not been met.
2.
Class Standing Prerequisites: A student must have certain class standing in order to take
select Business courses, i.e., ACCT201 requires Sophomore standing, or 30 hours
COMPLETED. The registration system will not allow a
student to register without proper class standing.
Can I still take business classes even if I am not admitted?
The business courses are available to all
students—of course you must meet any stated prerequisites. You can begin work on the business degree with the intention of
being admitted as soon as you meet the criteria for admission (see above).
HOWEVER, our Residency Requirement specifies that at least 30 semester hours of
business course work—to include all Area of Emphasis courses and BUAD450—must be
completed after the student has been admitted to the College of Business and
Administration undergraduate degree program.
Students planning to earn a business degree who are not yet admitted to the College of Business
must meet the intra-university transfer requirements and should make appropriate adjustments to
their schedules to ensure they will meet the Residency Requirement.
Students wishing to receive an Area of Emphasis in the College of Business must be
admitted to the Professional Program. Students
admitted to the College of Business but not the Professional Program will be eligible to graduate
with an emphasis in General Business. The
requirements are listed on page 38 of the 2004-05 Course Bulletin.
Are there many Business courses offered in the summer?
You can normally count on a selection of business core courses only. These are the courses all business students are required to take. Do not count on any “emphasis” courses to be offered during the summer.
Can I declare a double emphasis?
Yes, provided that you meet the following
requirements:
1. Students must fulfill all the requirements for both emphases.
2. No more than three credit hours of the courses required for the emphases may
overlap.
3. If there are not at least 15 hours of unique courses in each of the emphases, then a
student cannot graduate with a double emphasis.
4. Business electives will not count toward either emphasis.
