Methods
The purpose of this study was to explore attitudes about the level of involvement or the role of women in the church.
Concepts and Variables
“Role” as presented in the research question refers to what, if anything, women should be permitted to do in regards to involvement in the church. For example, one role could be the role of pastor, priest, rabbi or other clergy member who leads or plays a big part in the worship service. Other possible roles include Sunday school teacher, member of the choir or secretary.
The independent variable in this study was the type of church that an individual attends. “Type” includes the denomination (Catholic, Lutheran Methodist, Jewish, non denominational etc.) and how liberal or conservative the individual believed his or her church to be. The dependent variable in this study was the attitude of an individual towards the role of women in the church.
The dependent and independent variables were measured through the use of a questionnaire administered to ten individuals of varying backgrounds. The questionnaire was used to assess that individual's attitude towards the role of women in the church lease see attached).
The first part of the questionnaire included questions designed to assess the demographics of the population being surveyed. These demographic questions included: gender, total household income for specified year, highest level of education completed and age. Respondents were also asked whether or not they attended church and if the respondent answered “yes”, then he/she was asked to provide the name of the church he/she attends.
The respondents were then asked how conservative or liberal they viewed their church to be. Respondents were given a 5 point Likert type scale with 1 being Very Conservative and 5 being Very Liberal and asked to circle the response that best fit their church…
For purposes of this research project, a low intensity indicator of an individual's attitude about the role of women in the church was whether or not that individual thought women should be allowed to teach Sunday school. A medium intensity indicator was whether or not an individual thought women should be allowed to serve communion. A high intensity indicator was whether or not an individual thought women should be allowed to be pastors/priests/rabbis etc.
Hypothesis
The research hypothesis was that members of more traditional churches would be less likely to hold the opinion that women should have active roles in every part of the church than anyone else surveyed.
Methodology
For purposes of this research project, the respondents were chosen according to
accessibility.
Ideally, the respondents would have been chosen based on a stratified systematic sample. The sample would have been stratified on gender and type of religion, meaning religious denomination, and the sample would have included an equal number of male and female respondents. Researchers would have to obtain population information about El Paso County or Colorado Springs depending on the exact area being studied. The population for the sample would then need to be chosen based on the religious make-up of the area being studied. For example, if the population of Colorado Springs is 8% Muslim, then the population used in the survey would ideally be 8% Muslim in order to get a fair representative sample of the actual population of Colorado Springs. In sum, the sample would have been chosen according to population numbers reflective of population by type of religion.
