Legislative Branch Job Descriptions
Student Deans, Senators, and the Director of Finance
Responsibilities
- Serve as a member of the legislative body of the Student Government Association and disburse student activity fees.
- Ensure that the policies, programs, and services of any fee-funded student facility reflect the needs and desires of the SGA membership. This duty shall not supersede the authority of the CU-Colorado Springs Chancellor or the Board of Regents; all student fee-funded facilities are the property of the Board of Regents.
- Approve all student activity policies as the final authority. These policies shall be within the guidelines set by the CU Regents and the State of Colorado.
- Monitor student activity fee accounts for compliance with state and university fiscal policies.
- Disburse student activity fees or monies generated from student activity fees only to student organizations/clubs, or for events to benefit SGA members. Student activity fees, or profits there form, disbursed to faculty or staff organizations or any agency outside of the CU system shall be approved by a two-thirds majority vote of the active membership of the Student Assembly.
- Make open for public inspection all data concerning student activity fee accounts and policies.
- Approve all appointments made by the executive branch. Vacancies shall be officially posted on the SGA bulletin board and advertised for at least nine full school days prior to nominations being made.
- Initiate referenda or Constitutional amendments by a two-thirds majority vote of the active membership of the Student Assembly.
- Override vetoes placed by the executive branch by a two-thirds majority vote of the active membership of the senate.
- Approve a freeze placed on a student activity fee account by the executive branch within ten full school days after the action.
Expectations
- Attend all Assembly meetings.
- Serve on appointed committees and participate actively.
- Represent the student body responsibly and appropriately.
- Actively seek feedback and input from the student constituencies.
- Serve as an advocate for student interests and needs at CU-Colorado Springs.
- Create positive visibility on the campus as a member of the Assembly; let students know that you are a student senator, dean, or director.
- Familiarize yourself with the CU-Colorado Springs SGA Constitution, parliamentary procedure, and other pertinent information.
- Be prepared beforehand for all Assembly and committee meetings.
- Respect the responsibilities associated with representing the CU-Colorado Springs student body.
- Respect the other members of the Assembly and honor the inevitable diversity of viewpoints and opinions.
- Participate in all student leadership workshops provided for members of the Assembly.
- When you are unable to attend a meeting, designate an alternate to attend in your place.
- Student Deans: Establish a close liaison with your college dean and with student organizations affiliated with your college.

Additional Responsibilities for the Director of Finance
- Chair the Budget Advisory Committee.
- Assist club representatives with proposals and inform them about financial guidelines.
- Bring a calculator with you to all meetings. If changes are recommended to funding requests, you will be asked to calculate the new figures.
- Review proposals as they are submitted and check for accuracy of the figures.
- Scan submitted Program Review Forms to verify that approved funds have been spent correctly.
- Follow up on delinquent Program Review Forms. The SGA secretary will put a notice in the club's mailbox when such forms are overdue, but, many times, personal contact or a phone call to a club officer will still be necessary.
- Review monthly club account statements, as prepared by the secretary, and follow up on delinquent accounts by contacting club officers and requesting that all outstanding bills be submitted immediately.
Additional Responsibilities for the Student Dean of Multicultural Affairs
- Chair the Student Minority Advisory Committee.
- Meet regularly and keep active contact with all minority student organizations (e.g. Asian & Pacific Islander Association, Black Student Union, MECHA, Korean American Student Association, Native American Student Association, & United Students of Color ).
- Act as a liaison for these student organizations and student government.
- Work to ensure fair representation of the unique needs of minority students at CU-Colorado Springs.
- Work directly with the Associate Vice Chancellor for Minority Affairs or any other faculty or staff position created to address minority issues at CU-Colorado Springs. The Student Dean of Multicultural Affairs is responsible for taking the initiative in establishing and maintaining these contacts.
- Work with any and all other existing campus departments or organizations that address minority issues to include, but not limited to: the Affirmative Action Committee, the Faculty Minority Affairs Committee, the Minority Advisory Committee, and the Chancellor's Minority Affairs Committee
