University of Colorado, Colorado Springs (UCCS)
Hi - welcome to my homepage here at
UCCS.
I have worked here as an interdisciplinary researcher
since August 2004. Before that I was at the University
of Nevada, Reno as a visiting professor
for one year. Before then I was at Florida
Atlantic University for six years where
I did my Ph.D in Complex
Systems and Brain Sciences and taught
mostly psychology
classes. I'm a bit of a mutt - academically
speaking, but I'm told its better to call yourself "multidisciplinary"
- it has more syllables at least.
My time here is split between my research and teaching
activities in the Department
of Psychology and the Homeland
Security Center I also coach the
UCCS
fencing club, which gets me out of the
lab. Because life is too short to not be busy, I've also taught psychology
courses in the criminal justice program at
Remington
College.and in the Psychology Department at Metro State College Denver. I've also done some technology
teaching & course development in geography programs.

Research Interests
My
research interests include the psychology of terrorism,
cyber-psychology (people and computers) and Incident Management
(emergencies and such). I've also looked at the fractal and scaling
properties of human spatial behavior. I really enjoy collaborating with
other people - its so much more fun to be able to kick ideas around
with people who are on your wavelength. I'm fortunate to be able to
work with folks all over the country - its great. Click here for more information.
My current lines of research are :
- - Root causes of terrorism
- - The psychology & technology of emergency operations management
- User behavior in online environments
and Massively Multiplayer Online Computer Games (In collaboration with
Michelle Companion in the Department of Sociology)
- - How people create and perceive randomness

Courses Taught
I really enjoy teaching - in fact its what kept
me going through grad school and keeps me going today. Small classes can be fun - but I also really
like teaching large (nay... HUGE) class sections, especially in intro
courses. I guess this is the latent performer in me trying to get out
! I guess my moment in the sun was getting a near-perfect score on my
Psychology class evaluations the last semester I taught at FAU. Here's
a list of things I've taught or am teaching at the moment:
-
Biological Bases of Behavior (taught at Florida
Atlantic University and this fall - at UCCS)
- Forensic
Psychology (taught at Remington College and Metro State College Denver) - Research Methods (taught at FAU and UCCS)
- General
Psychology (taught at
Florida Atlantic University
) and now at
UCCS
- Organizational
Psychology (taught at Remington College )
-
Personality
psychology (taught at UCCS)
- Social
Psychology (taught at Remington College)
- Psychology
of terrorism (taught at UCCS)
Because of my research interests, I've also picked
up some skills from the GeoSpatial Technology world which I've taught
on occasion.
- Geography
of Terrorism (UCCS)
- Introduction to Geographic
Information Systems (UCCS)
- Intermediate Geographic Information Systems (Taught at the University
of Nevada, Reno) - Advanced Geographic Information Systems (UCCS)
- World Regional Geography (Taught at Florida Atlantic University and
University of Nevada, Reno)
I've also trained as a fencing coach at the US Olympic
Center.
- Fencing
(taught at UCCS) - Medieval Martial Arts (taught at UCCS)

Other Activities
I fence a couple of times a week at
Pike's Peak Fencing
League, on weekends I go swordfight in the park at our local Melee club I read sci-fi, fantasy, 19th
century fiction as well as various non-fiction books. I try and keep up
with current affairs (BBC
news and the Economist
are favourites). I occasionally play the piano,
mess around doing computer games, go to the movies and try to maintain
a somewhat normal social life. I sleep too when I get the chance.
