Chem 418 - Spring 2008
Objectives for Exam 3
Define and explain terms discussed in class and all lecture material, be able to meet all Reading Objectives and do problems like those in all homework sets.
Write descriptions below each component of a block diagram for all block diagrams shown in class. State the advantages and disadvantages of each technique.
Describe the overview and the four specific surface techniques discussed in class
Describe the basics of NMR discussed in class as well as the special types of NMR.
Describe thermal methods discussed in class.
Calculate parameters of a separation, using a chromatogram and data provided.
Describe each term of the van Deemter equation using text and drawings and sketch the overall appearance of H versus flow rate.
Describe the mechanism of separation for all techniques discussed in class (separations overview, GC and LC) using text and drawings. Describe each type of detector for each technique.
Describe hardware used in the techniques, such as types of mobile phases, stationary phases, solvents, and coatings.
Describe similarities and differences between preparatory-scale and analytical-scale separations.
Describe the purpose and process of a PCR analyzer.
Describe signal-to-noise reduction and types of noise.
Select the best analytical technique for a given task from a few techniques and explain your decision. You must weigh the selection factors from Notes1 in making your decision. In addition, you will be provided with some information about each technique. For techniques we have not yet covered in class, you will not be required to know how the technique works, but you should make use of the information provided about it.
Apply knowledge learned in lecture, homework, and readings to a situation not seen before.
Read a passage from a journal article and answer questions on its
content.
