Math 5480 - Spring 2012

  • 1. Mathematical Contest in Modeling Problems
  • 2. (See Mathematical Modelling: Case Studies and Projects,

(FREE* download for UCCS students on Springerlink.com)
  • 3. Mathematical Modeling for the Life Sciences,
    by Jacques Istas, Springer 2005

  • 4. Control Theory (closely related to the topics covered in class later on).
    • Topics in Calculus of Variations
    • Pontryagin Maximum Principle (PMP)
    • Applications of PMP to economics, population dynamics, aerospace
  • 5. Topics related to the student's field of expertise...

TIMELINE:

  • March 19th - Every graduate student is expected to choose a topic and let me know in writing (email is fine).
  • April 16th - An initial report (2 page minimum) is expected. This should contain a precise formulation of the problem, of the assumptions to be used and the modeling approach.
  • May 9th - The final report on the project (about 6-8 pages) is due at the same time as the Final Exam.

FORMAT: Preferably, the report should be typed in LaTeX (or equivalent type-setting software). A template will be made available soon. When in doubt about the format, please ask the instructor.
