Characteristic variables for a completely integrable shallow water equation

The initial value problem for a completely integrable evolution equation from shallow water wave theory is formulated in terms of its characteristic curves. Finite dimensional discretizations are introduced and solved via Gram-Schmidt orthogonalization.
