Satisfactory Progress toward the Applied Science PhD
UCCS normally expects doctoral students to complete their degree within seven years.
Students failing to meet this requirement may be dismissed from the program.
Extensions require the approval of the UCCS Graduate School.
In addition to this university requirement, the Mathematics Department
Graduate Committee will regularly review the progress of doctoral students
based on the following indicators.
Indicators of Satisfactory Progress
1. Enrollment in appropriate graduate level mathematics courses.
Grades of A or B in these courses.
2. Preliminary examinations must be taken by the end of the first year of study.
All preliminary examinations must be passed by the end of the second year of study.
3. Comprehensive examinations must be taken by the end of the third year of study.
All comprehensive examinations must be passed by the end of the fourth year of study.
4. The dissertation proposal examination must be passed by the end of the fifth year of study.
5. The dissertation defense must be passed by the end of the seventh year of study.
These guidelines are indications of minimal satisfactory progress.
It is not a recommended schedule,
and progress for full time doctoral students should be more rapid.
The Mathematics Department Graduate Committee may dismiss from the program any doctoral student
not judged to be making satisfactory progress toward their degree.
