PSYCHOLOGY

Dr. Leilani Feliciano came to UCCS in 2007 from the University of California, San Francisco, where she completed a two-year NIMH sponsored post-doctoral fellowship. This research fellowship focused on developing partnerships with community agencies and research with underserved populations. Dr. Feliciano earned her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, MI in 2005. She obtained her M.A. in Clinical Psychology with an emphasis in behavioral medicine in 2000 from the University of the Pacific in Stockton, CA. Prior to her graduate training, she completed her B.A. in Psychology from the University of Southern California. Dr. Feliciano teaches undergraduate courses in abnormal psychology (senior seminar) and graduate courses in the psychology of aging II and the clinical skills laboratory.

Dr. Feliciano's primary research interest is in studying and applying behavioral interventions for clinical problems and mental disorders in older adults. Specific areas of interest include late-life depression, anxiety, and behavioral problems associated with dementia. Dr. Feliciano has many years of experience working as a behavior specialist working with older adults with dementia, developmental disabilities, and adults with severe mental illness designing behavior modification programs, training staff, implementing interventions, and outcome evaluation.

Her program of research has two goals: 1) behavioral management of problem behaviors in adults with cognitive impairments or other mental disorders and their caregivers and 2) behavioral medicine interventions for the prevention and management of medical problems and/or their symptoms. Dr. Feliciano's current projects include the assessment and management of dehydration in older adults, disseminating strategies for managing depression and problem behaviors associated with dementia to caregivers in assisted living facilities, examining the utility of different screening measures for cognitive impairment in elders.
