Frequently Asked Questions about Orientation
Q: I’m a new freshman/transfer student. Why do I need to attend an orientation session?
A: All new undergraduate students are required to attend an orientation session. Orientation is designed to help you become familiar with your resources on campus and, most importantly, help you understand your academic requirements. This is your first step toward becoming a successful student on campus!
Q: I’ve attended UCCS in the past. Why would I need to attend an orientation session?
A: Students who have been inactive for a year or longer will be required to follow the new degree requirements of the upcoming year. In many cases, these requirements can be very different from prior years. You may be asked to complete another orientation so that you can be informed of new requirements for your degree program.
Q: What does my orientation fee cover?
A: It is necessary for orientation to charge a one time fee in order to provide program staffing, materials, lunch (for freshmen only) and snacks. Orientation does not charge fees for profit. The orientation program is not covered through any additional student fees.
Q: Are my parents required to attend the orientation session with me?
A: Parent participation in orientation is optional. While parents and guests are welcome to attend orientation, freshman orientation sessions will have a separate program designed for them and will not be able to stay with you throughout the program. Parents and guests will be required to attend Question/Answer and Financial Sessions while students attend their own informational sessions.
Q: What is the agenda for the freshman/transfer orientation?
A:
Sample Agenda for
Summer/Fall Admitted Freshmen
Sample Agenda for Spring Admitted Freshmen
Sample Agenda for Transfer Orientation
Q: Do I have to pick a major before I attend my orientation session?
A: You do not have to choose a major before you attend orientation. For first time freshmen, students who have not declared a major or are undecided about their major will have the opportunity to meet with the Pre-Majors advisor and other undecided students in the Undecided Advising Room.
However, for new transfer students, it is helpful for advisors to have an idea of the possible path you are planning on taking in order to evaluate your transcripts effectively. Transfer students should sign up for orientation under a major they think they might declare.
A: No, you do not have to wait to receive your orientation packet in the mail and may sign up through our website. However you must be officially admitted to UCCS in order to sign up for an orientation session. If you have not been admitted, your reservation will not be processed. Check with Admissions and Records (719-255-3383) for your admission status.
Q: Why can’t I complete the online orientation?
A: While online orientation covers basic information about UCCS, it is no substitute for an interactive, in-depth orientation session. Permission to complete online orientation is only granted to out-of-state students with extenuating circumstances.
Q: When/How do I pay for my orientation session?
A: Please send your orientation
payment to our office prior to attending your session. Payments can me
made via check or money order made out to UCCS Orientation. Please send your
payment to:
