Tabernae Tabernae
Tabernae were vendor's shops usually found on either side of the doorway entrance to the house. These tabernae had separate doors to the street and did not open into the interior of the house. The tabernae could be rented out to vendors or used for the family business. Much like McDonald's or Burger King is today, these would have been the 'fast food' shops of the Roman world. Many upper class Roman widows supplemented their income by renting the tabernae to vendors outside the family.
