The exedra was a large elegant room located off of the peristylium. This room would have been the location of the evenings ritual entertainment or convivium. The matrona or married woman of the house would have acted as the hostess for the dinner party only if accompanied by a male member of the family. The walls of the exedra in most cases would have been painted with fresco paintings and the floors would have been covered with mosaics or marble. The predominant theme of the decorations would have been related to the gardens in the peristylium, while the decoration in the rest of the domus would have been more likely to contain a Greek mythology theme. |
