Mosaic floor
The alae were two wings located on either side of the atrium and the floors were probably covered with the same mosaic or marble tiles that covered the atrium floor. The exact use of this space is unclear, but may have been used to hold the household weaving looms. The matrona of a upper class Roman family would have overseen the weaving that was done by the household slaves and metered out the daily allotment of wool to each slave.
