The MESI (Maximizing the Effect of Supplemental Instruction) program aims to improve the academic achievement and retention of at-risk students in mathematics courses. The at-risk students are those who do failing work in their mid-term exams, turn in consistently poor homework, consistently miss classes, or are in danger of failing a math course for other reasons. Under the MESI program, the academic performance of the identified at-risk students are collected from instructors twice a month. These students are contacted twice a month. Their academic status is discussed, and they are encouraged to use the various supplemental help available to them such as the free tutoring services of the Math Learning Center, the instructor’s office hours, the Supplemental Instruction sessions, the library resources, etc. Where necessary, counseling on study skills, time management and the like is also provided. A select number of at-risk students who make significant progress will be recognized for their accomplishment at the end of the semester.
