Departmental Policies & Information
- Calculators:
Calculator Policy: Calculator usage on exams is limited to a basic scientific calculator with a minimal number of storage registers and no graphing capability.
- Late Drops:
The university policy for late drops follows; So called “late drops” are drops that occur after the 10th week of the semester (Spring/Fall) and the 5th week in summer are of real concern to the Department of Mathematics and the College of Letters Arts & Sciences.
After census date, the instructor’s signature is required for a drop. If the instructor chooses to sign the Course Change Form because the situation warrants a drop under the instructor’s course policy on dropping the course, the drop will be processed. If the instructor judges the situation does not meet the course policy for drops, he/she will not sign the form and the student will not be dropped from the course. (Course Change Forms will not be accepted without required signatures and the drop is effective the date forms are received by the Records Office, Main Hall room 108.)
- After the 10th week of the regular semester or the 5th week of the summer term, courses may not be dropped unless there are circumstances clearly beyond the student’s control. In addition to the instructor’s certification (as described above), the dean of the college offering the course must approve the drop. In this case the drop slip must be signed by both the instructor and the dean (or associate dean). The dean's signature IS NOT AUTOMATIC,and will only be granted for extenuating circumstances (accident, illness, etc.) Dropping to avoid a grade of F in the course is not a sufficient reason to get the deans signature.
- Grading and "Incomplete" coursework
As of 1 January 2009 in the CU Uniform Grading Policy at www.cu.edu/policies/Academic/gradingsys.html. Please see the new version, which incorporates the decision to remove IW/IF and substitute "I". The Faculty Council and the Educational Policy and University Standards committee of Council have approved a motion to remove "IW" and "IF" from our grading symbol system and to add the new symbol "I", which turns into an F at the end of one year maximum. All students who registered for courses beginning before 1 Jan 2009 were and are still able to ask the faculty member teaching the course for an "IW" or "IF", depending on the rules of your school or college. (Most schools and colleges have already stopped allowing faculty to use "IW". Check with your dean's office if you are unsure.) Students registering for courses beginning on or after 1 Jan 2009 will be able to request only the grade of "I", as "IW" and "IF" will cease to be used for new registrations as of that date. Many schools and colleges now have written agreements that the student and the Instructor of Record sign, indicating how the student will complete the work missing.
