• Engineering Challenge Day.  This is a one-day contest where 6-8 graders come to the UCCS campus and compete in one of five engineering contests. There have been around 500 participants, and among them about 90 chose the Math contest. This year, the Math Club designed and coordinated the Math contest.

• Pikes Peak Regional Undergraduate Mathematics Research Conference - The first annual meeting was organized at Colorado State University - Pueblo. In Spring 2005 it will be held at Colorado College and in 2006 at UCCS!

   

• Math Modeling Contest - This is an annual national contest for flexing your muscles in modeling real-world problems from engineering and sciences. Check this out at the COMAP website. We plan to create teams of (up to) three students who are willing to compete with other teams from around the world during the weekend-long competition. UCCS teams have been very successful in 1999, 2000 and 2001 contests (see diplomas posted outside the Math Dept). Sample problems from previous years are posted to give you a flavor of the contest.

• Catch the Big One! - Fall Career Fair, Friday, Oct 17,2003 - University Center Gym from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. with around 35 employers represented. Campus Activities is providing pizza. This is an excellent opportunity for students to connect with employers, and would be especially helpful to seniors. A list of participating employers can be found here.

• The American Math Society (AMS) Sectional Meeting was held in Boulder on Oct 2-4,2003. It was a great opportunity to learn about the latest research activities in various fields of Mathematics. The Math Club organized a trip on Saturday, Oct 4th, to visit (as part of a Special Session on Nonlinear Waves) the world-renowned research lab JILA at UC Boulder, which is home of two 2001 Nobel Prize Laureates in Physics.
