General principals of automated design optimization will be presented, starting with very simple
concepts. Software and applications will be discussed to demonstrate the breadth of design tasks
that can be addressed using this technology. Specific optimization examples will be presented to
demonstrate this technology on real world design tasks of considerable complexity. With today's
software, we an achieve an optimum design with much less effort than is normally required to
achieve only an acceptable design. It is concluded that optimization methods can greatly enhance
design productivity.
