2008 SOUTHERN REGIONAL ALGEBRA CONFERENCE

(with recognition of the retirement of K.M. Rangaswamy)

University of Colorado at Colorado Springs

Colorado Springs, Colorado, U.S.A.

September 26 – 28, 2008

The University of Colorado at Colorado Springs will host the 2008 edition of the annual Southern Regional Algebra Conference. The conference this year will in particular honor the 70th birthday and retirement of Professor K.M. Rangaswamy.  We will follow the usual SRAC format of 25 minute talks. The first talk will begin at 1:30 PM on Friday September 26 and the last talk will end before noon on Sunday September 28. As usual, there is no financial support provided by the host institution for SRAC participants. (However, supper on Friday evening will be funded by the Conference for all participants, as will a dinner on Saturday evening for participants and their families).

Registration:  The conference is open to all mathematicians.  The Southern Regional Algebra Conference has historically attracted algebraists (in all areas)  from the southern region of the United States.    There is no registration fee.  We ask that you fill out a registration form (whether you plan to give a talk or not), so that we have some idea about the number of potential participants. [Register]*If you are having trouble with the registration page please send your information directly to Gene Abrams at abrams@math.uccs.edu.

There will be four sessions:  Friday afternoon, Saturday morning, Saturday afternoon, and Sunday morning.  Talks will be 25 minutes long, with 5 minute breaks in between.   Talks are encouraged, especially in those topics and areas to which Professor Rangaswamy has contributed.   You must submit a title and abstract for your talk, you may do so as part of the online registration form.   Please submit both a .pdf and .tex file for your abstract, and limit the length of your abstract to no more than half a page. Abstract deadline is August 15.

There will be a dinner in Ranga’s honor on Friday, September 26, following the final talk of that day.  The dinner will be held on the University of Colorado campus.   The dinner will be free for participants.  Participants’ families are invited as well, the costs for non-participants is yet to be determined, but will probably be approximately USD 30.    We will ask you to share any anecdotes you might have about Ranga, or just share your fondest stories, at an open-mic “roast” after the dinner.

There will be an informal picnic on Saturday evening.  The picnic will be free for participants and their families.  The location of the picnic is to be determined.

Each participant must arrange her or his own housing.  Information about some of the housing options is available [Hotels] .     The University of Colorado campus is approximately 5 miles from downtown Colorado Springs.

Colorado Springs Municipal Airport   [COS]   is served by many major airlines.   The drive from the airport to the UCCS campus is approximately 25 minutes.  A taxi from the airport to downtown is approximately USD 30.    Denver International Airport [DIA] is approximately a 75 minute drive from the UCCS campus.

Visitor parking on the UCCS campus is available. [Information about parking]

On Friday you should park in the campus parking building, while on Saturday and Sunday you may park free anywhere on campus (except for specially marked spaces).

The Third Announcement containing the conference schedule and final details will be available in early September 2008.  For more information please contact the conference organizer, Gene Abrams, at abrams@math.uccs.edu  or  (719) 262-3182.
