Mathematics in High Schools

Programs offered by the Department of Mathematics at CU - Colorado Springs

1)   MathOnline   (http://www.uccs.edu/~math/mathonline)

Through the CU - Colorado Springs MathOnline system, students can complete regular, traditional university mathematics courses (and thereby receive regular, traditional university academic credit which can typically be transferred to any university throughout the country) without the need to come to the UCCS campus.  In particular, the MathOnline system allows advanced high school students the opportunity to earn university mathematics credit prior to their graduation from high school.  Among many other advantages, this program allows advanced high school students to avoid any "mathematical downtime" prior to their entering the college or university of their choice.

In order to deliver courses in this way, the Department of Mathematics at CU - Colorado Springs has developed a unique presentation system, in which traditional mathematics courses are slightly modified so that both the "boardwork" and instructor's voice are available real-time to students "at-a-distance" via the Internet.  Boardwork and voice are also archived for asynchronous playback.  This delivery method not only allows students to participate at times and locations which may be more convenient and accessible than on-campus class hours, it also affords all students the opportunity to replay lectures and print archived notes.

Courses offered via the MathOnline system during Academic Year 2007/2008 include:

Calculus I,  Calculus II,  Calculus III,  Discrete Mathematics, Linear Algebra, Differential Equations, and Number Theory

2)  CU - Succeed   (http://www.uccs.edu/~math/CUSucceed)

Through our ongoing discussions with high school mathematics teachers throughout the Pikes Peak region, we have come to discover that many of the "precalculus" or "mathematical analysis" courses taught at various high schools are quite close in content and spirit to the CU - Colorado Springs course Elementary Functions of Calculus (Math 105).  In the CU - Succeed program, students who successfully complete the "precalculus" course in their high school simultaneously earn credit for the university-level Math 105 course. Similarly, AB Calculus classes match  with our Calculus 1 class and Calculus BC matches with our Calculus 1 and 2 classes and AP Statistics matches with our Math 281.

In the context of this program the duties of the high school teacher remain unchanged.  The work required of students remains unchanged. The successful implementation of this program at a particular high school requires curricular and administrative coordination at the beginning of the academic year.  Students are charged a nominal fee  for administrative processing.
