Subject searching
Subject searching uses controlled vocabulary and will retrieve relevant items on your research topic.

The subdivisions under broad subject headings will help you narrow your search for information. Here are two examples of subdivisions listed under the main subject heading for the history of the Ottoman Empire::

Turkey History Ottoman Empire 1288 1918

Keyword searching
Keyword searching allows you to search for any word(s) in the subject, title, author, and content notes for all item records in the catalog. Keyword searches are not as concise as subject searches and may retrieve irrelevant items. However, keyword search is very useful...

...if you don't know the appropriate subject heading for your topic.
...the subject heading is too general or too specific.
...if you are searching for a new trend or concept.

Examples: "bandung conference" or "young turks"

Prospector
Search and request books and AV materials from over 20 research and public library collections throughout the state of Colorado and Wyoming. Items requested through Prospector will arrive at Kraemer within 3-5 working days. When the items are available for pickup from the Circulation Desk, you will be notified by e-mail.

WorldCat
An international catalog that UCCS students, staff and faculty may use to request items not available through UCCS or Prospector. You need an ILLiad account to request items in WorldCat. Items can take 2 weeks or more to be delivered.

Historical Abstracts
A comprehensive bibliographic indexing and abstracting reference to the history of the world from 1450 to the present. Abstracts dissertations as well as journal literature. No full-text.

JSTOR
Full-text of 117 core journals in the Humanities and Social Sciences. Coverage includes the entirety of each journal with the exception of the current five years.

Project MUSE
Project MUSE covers the fields of literature and criticism, history, the visual and performing arts, cultural studies, education, political science, gender studies, and many others.

Dissertations and Theses
Indexes the complete range of academic subjects appearing in dissertations accepted at accredited institutions. Abstracting of dissertations begins with 1980 and abstracting of theses begins with 1988.

Academic Search Premier
Provides full text for more than 3,430 scholarly publications covering academic areas of study including social sciences, humanities, education, computer sciences, engineering, language and linguistics, arts & literature, medical sciences, and ethnic studies. It also includes book reviews. This database is updated on a daily basis.

Academic OneFile
Contains peer-reviewed, full-text articles from the world's leading journals and reference sources in the physical sciences, technology, medicine, social sciences, the arts, theology, literature and other subjects.

 

Newspapers

LexisNexis Academic
Full-text access to newspaper literature from around the world Coverage for each publication varies but generally does not go back further than 20 years..

New York Times (1851-present)
Electronic access to the New York Times is available through the Pikes Peak Library District. To access this database remotely, you must use your public library card number and pin number.

Kraemer has the entire run of the New York Times (from 1851) and its corresponding indexes.

Google News Archive Search (formerly Paper of Record) Search and explore historical newspaper archives. In addition to helping you search, News archive search can automatically create timelines which show selected results from relevant time periods. You must pay for many of the articles in this database.

ILLiad
If the Library doesn't have access to the journal article you want, you can still get it through interlibrary loan. With an ILLiad account, you can place your requests online. This service can take anywhere from a few days to two weeks depending on the format inwhich the article is delivered. DO YOUR RESEARCH EARLY.
