Middle Eastern Studies Certificate Program |
Coursework in Arabic and Farsi language instruction, Middle Eastern culture and Islamic Philosophy and History, offered only at the Fort Carson Education Center in Colorado Springs Afghanistan, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Iraq. These countries are at the center of world politics and American foreign policy. America's continued military presence in the Middle East demands soldiers who are capable of operating effectively among local populations and earning trust. What knowledge does a soldier on the ground need to have? How are where is it learned? The Extended Studies Program at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs brings four credit courses to the Fort Carson Army Education Center that answers these questions. The courses comprise the Certificate in Middle Eastern Studies. These courses are designed to help soldiers prepare for deployment to the Middle East, and may also be taken for credit by UCCS and other university students. The certificate program includes two courses in language instruction in either Arabic or Farsi, one course in cultural awareness, and one course dealing with Islamic philosophy and history following the fall of the Ottoman Empire. All courses are accredited and may be applied to degree programs at UCCS or other universities. |

UPCOMING SCHEDULE OF COURSES 2009 SCHEDULE Introduction to Arabic I Middle Eastern Culture Seminar The cost for these courses is $175/credit hour. To request registration information, send an e-mail to lases@uccs.edu. These courses are eligible for military tuition assistance. Consult the CTAM system to begin the approval process. In addition to completing the TA approval, soldiers must also complete the UCCS registration process as outlined in the paragraph above. For all others, tuition is due at time of registration. This course is not approved for Financial Aid through UCCS. Purchase of textbook is required. Coursework will require reading, writing and speaking in Modern Standard Arabic. |
