HIST 300-3 Mass Violence and Political Oppression in Modern Times: Story, History, Imagery

Offered on the CU-NET televised platform on Colorado Springs Comcast cable

20th-Century war, genocide and oppression as represented by certain forms of art—including film, literature (short fiction and poetry), photography, painting and other visual arts. Some historical background reading, some autobiographical accounts—but the majority of the course material consists of artistic representations (movies, stories, drawings, etc.). What can artists accomplish that usual historical approaches cannot? What are the pitfalls of using artistic approaches to understand these extreme events? Taught by Prof. Robert Sackett of the UCCS Department of History.
